Worked examples
- 2:45 PM → 1445. It’s after noon, so add 12 to the hour: 2 + 12 = 14. Write the hour and minutes together with no colon: 1445, said “fourteen forty-five”.
- 7:05 AM → 0705. Morning hours keep their number but always use two digits: 07. Said “zero seven zero five”.
- 12:30 AM → 0030. The midnight hour is 00 in military time, so 12:30 AM is 0030, said “zero zero thirty”.
- 12:00 PM → 1200. Noon stays 12, said “twelve hundred”.
- 2130 → 9:30 PM. The hour is over 12, so subtract 12: 21 − 12 = 9, and it’s PM.
How it’s calculated
12-hour to military:
- 12:xx AM (the midnight hour) → 00xx.
- 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM → same hour with a leading zero if needed (9:15 AM → 0915).
- 12:xx PM (the noon hour) → 12xx.
- 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM → add 12 to the hour (6:40 PM → 1840).
Military to 12-hour:
- 00xx → 12:xx AM. 01xx–11xx → same hour, AM. 12xx → 12:xx PM. 13xx–23xx → subtract 12, PM.
Military time is written as four digits without a colon and is often followed by the word “hours”. Civilian 24-hour time, used across the UK and Europe, is the same clock but usually written with a colon (14:45). Midnight can be written 0000 (start of the day) or 2400 (end of the day); this converter reads 2400 as midnight.

Frequently asked questions
What is 1500 in military time?
1500 is 3:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any military hour over 12 to get the afternoon or evening time: 15 − 12 = 3.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 marks the end of one, so a shift might run from 1600 to 2400. Most systems, including this converter, display midnight as 0000.
How do you say 0800 in military time?
Say “zero eight hundred”. Times on the hour use “hundred”, and leading zeros are spoken. 1300 is “thirteen hundred”.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
They use the same 24-hour clock. The difference is style: military time drops the colon (1830) and is often followed by “hours”, while everyday 24-hour time is written 18:30.
What is 12:45 AM in military time?
0045. The hour after midnight is hour 00, so 12:45 AM becomes 0045, said “zero zero forty-five”.
